Service Description

This course is open to all skill levels. Join Craig Hoffmann, local artist and professor, as he shares his Native American techniques to create hand-built pieces out of specially made clay. Students will learn many different processes during this course, including how to; make clay, work with leather-hard pieces, burnish, as well as applying terra sigillata surface designs. A unique low-fire firing process for all pieces created in this course will adhere to Maria Martinez’s ‘Black on Black’ technique. This unique course schedule is due to the different clay stages that must be followed in order for certain techniques to be achieved in this specific process. Pieces will be fired and presented during the last class as students are invited to participate in a friendly critique of the finished pieces.
