Blacksmithing 102: Chef's Knife

Service Description
Elevate your blade-crafting skills with precision and finesse. You'll choose between a classic French chef's knife or a traditional Usuba and learn the specialized techniques each requires. Discover how edge hardening selectively strengthens the blade's cutting edge while maintaining flexibility in the spine, and master the delicate edge geometries that separate a kitchen showpiece from a practical culinary tool. You'll gain insights into heat treatment, grinding precision, and the subtle differences that make professional kitchen knives perform beautifully. Please keep in mind, blacksmithing is hard work. You will be using a 3-5lb hammer to repeatedly strike steel which requires ample upper-body strength and control. While this class is perfect for beginners, your end product will be a result of individual strength and ability. Our teachers will guide you each step of the way, and you will gain knowledge and understanding of the craft that can be applied to later classes where you can continue to build the strength and muscle memory required to make more advanced pieces. PARKING: please park in the lot of the ceramic studio and join us up the driveway at our smithing station. SAFETY GUIDELINES: Appropriate attire must be worn to work in the shop. No jewelry or baggy clothes should be worn. It is recommended to wear cotton clothing (as close to 100% cotton as you can- jeans and a cotton top/jacket are a great choice) and avoid highly synthetic blends that can melt. Long hair must be tied back. No open toed shoes, high heels or shorts may be worn for blacksmithing classes. This class is designed for 18+ *Hearing protection is required while tools are in operation or metal is being hammered. If you do not bring your own we will have earplugs available for $1. *Eye protection is required. If you do not have safety glasses we will have pairs available for$5. Hydration is important, especially during summer months. Bringing your own water bottle is strongly encouraged. All other required supplies will be provided.

Cancellation Policy
Please cancel at least 24 hours before your scheduled class. Any cancelations communicated less than 24 hours in advance will be charged at 50% tuition. Notice of Rescheduling: Rescheduling should be communicated to the Studio via email, phone, or other designated communication channels at least 24 hours in advance. Please include the time and date for rescheduling if known, otherwise a credit can be given and reused later. In case of a no-call no-show, where a student fails to attend a class without prior notification, no reschedules or refunds will be provided. If the Studio cancels a class or workshop, students will be offered either a rescheduled date or a refund. Refund Process: Refunds for cancellations more than 24 hours before the start of class will be processed. Refunds will be issued using the original payment method, and it may take a reasonable amount of time for the refund to be processed and reflected in the student's account.
